Earthquake in Tehran

Over 500 killed in Iran earthquake

[World News]: Tehran, Feb.22: Over 500 people have reportedly died after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit several villages in south-eastern Iran.

News reports said that the epicentre of the quake was near Zarand in Iran's Kerman Province, which is about 740 km from Tehran. Iranian authorities claimed that up to 70 percent of the buildings in six villages around Zarand have been damaged or destroyed, and added that they expected the casualties to rise as inclement weather was preventing rescue operations.

So far, 196 bodies have been recovered from the quake-hit sites, reported the BBC and other international news agencies. About 5000 people have been admitted to hospitals for treatment.

About 30 villages in the province have also been affected by the earthquake. (ANI)
