Hieronymus Bosch action figures

These really tickled me.

It's a good thing (for my pocketbook) they do not appear to be for sale, or at least the artist has not created the website of his sculpture works for that purpose. There are many other stunning sets to view, including Dali, Klimt, Beardsley, Degas and Escher to name a few, but definitely the Bosch figures are among my favorites.

Yes, yes. I realize I said posts would be slowing up, but I caught a little lagtime earlier this afternoon so I thought I'd stop by and toss these few tidbits over and around, what the heck.

Grandma's cookies never tasted so good...

GRANDMA'S MARIJUANA COOKBOOK CREATION STORY
I am Grandma George, 69 years young as of the year 2004, mother of three boys, and grandmother of six. I have lived all my life on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. All three of my children use cannabis. I am very open minded on the 420 subject. One day in the year 1975 I noticed one of my sons sprinkling something on his morning toast. It was a very potent ground up marijuana buds. He used a new coffee grinder to grind up the pot and was left with crystals. I loved the smell and thought it was a cooking herb. My son described what it really was and I decided to experiment with it. I learned the best method for cooking with marijuana is to extract THC and throw away the pulp. I made marijuana butter for my son. Now there is a delicious marijuana butter sitting in the fridge. He says his morning toast is a dream...   MORE...

Posts are gonna be slow for a bit...

Howdy all.

Bizzy time for me at the moment-- several irons in the cooker and dayjob's been incredibly bizzy for the past few months (thanks to those damned creationists!) So, basically my posting activity here at Olla and the other blogs I post at is going to slow down a bit for the next couple weeks.

I will try to keep a few interesting things popping up here so it doesn't go all blank in the meantime, but just wanted to give a shout to y'all and let you know where my head is at. Feel free to drop me any links or other infos if you think of it and I will put 'em up here (and by the way, Johannes, if you read this, got any new Metaversal reports for us?)

Right then, as you were.

Wiccans meeting on Air Force base

January 26, 2005, WorldNetDaily

Gatherings get military's blessing as long as not contrary to 'good order'

Members of the U.S. Air Force stationed at a Texas base – which prides itself as being the most religiously diverse – are attending weekly meetings for devotees of the Wiccan religion at a base facility.

Though the Wiccan meetings at Lackland Air Force Base are not considered "services," since there is no official chaplain presiding, they do draw between 25 and 50 people.

"All individuals assigned to Lackland are free to worship the faith of their choosing, whether traditional or non-traditional, as guaranteed to each of us under the U.S. Constitution," Oscar Balladares, the chief of Media Relations at the base, told WND, emphasizing that "Wiccan meetings revolve around discussions of caring for the Earth and its resources and do not include any type of Satanic worship."

Though often associated with Satanism, Wiccans, known also as witches or neopagans, don't believe in Satan, according to one online description.

"This form of witchcraft has nothing to do with sorcery, and is instead based on a reverence for nature, the worship of a fertility goddess, a restrained hedonism and group magic aimed at healing," states encyclopedia.com.

Air Force regulations say: "The Chaplain Service accommodates requests of chaplain services and/or support for religious practices unless the specific accommodation is logistically impossible, or contrary to good order and discipline prohibited by law or policy. If a specific request is denied, Chaplain Service members remain responsible for pursuing alternative means for accommodation."

Balladares stressed that the base "prohibits discrimination based on religious preference or beliefs. Base policy also provides that any religious body that does not have an endorsing body may hold organizational and informational meetings on base in Chaplain Service designated facilities at the sole discretion of the Wing Chaplain."

Since Wicca has no "endorsing body" – it is a diverse movement with no central authority – it falls under the discretion of the Chaplain Service.   MORE...

filmfatale industries

This is the website of a remarkable young woman named Lorelai who has apparently been very busy doing some pretty amazing things with her life.

Go investigate
her experiences if you have a moment-- she's made it all available in various media formats--from writing to photography, film and music-- you will not be disappointed (or bored).

I've still got an adrenaline rush from watching the video of her tongue piercing, not to mention the skydiving pics...

Stop-motion animation gallery

Some very nice quality video clips here to view.

Quite a few of them have sound but some are silent, which are fun to leave looping while you have your own soundtrack musics going.

A little history about Eastern European stop-motion animation:
(from the website)
European puppet animation springs from an ancient tradition of live puppet theater, best represented perhaps by punch and judy. While these shows are enjoyed by children, the themes are often quite adult... similar to the plays of Shakespeare which are rife with violence and sexual depravity but presented in an intelligent artistic fashion.

One of the things that make these traditional puppet shows so fascinating is the old-world craftsmanship... techniques handed down generation after generation using handmade tools. The heads are carved from wood and carefully painted and costumes are elaborately crafted from multiple layers of rich embroidered fabrics and fine ornaments. It all serves to create a self-contained miniature world of strange haunting beauty. The puppets were the livelihood of their creators... puppeteers would lovingly craft their own puppets and upkeep them, and travel with their wheeled carts from village to village putting on performances and hoping to make some money. The craft would be handed down through the family.

Then with the dawn of the moving image came trikfilm techniques... the magical effects photography techniques of Melies and the Lumiere Brothers and others, which very shortly resulted in animation, both cartoons and stop motion. This is where our tale begins...

Peter Murphy (new interview)

From Paris-based magazine Elegy (January 15, 2005)

Peter speaks about the word 'Unshattered' (the title of his new album):

A new word made up for the occasion. Whole, only to break apart and gather again. Something to do with '…every moment He is in a new creation' Nothing remains, but now… and all that. Don't ask a painter to explain, that's for art historians. Just watch and listen, and perhaps let go. Dive and come up for air. And dive again. Like the dolphins do. Dig deep and bring up pearls. Give em away and dive again. I reckon this is what us mannequin bards do.

VW into "viral" hoax?

Funny, this ad comes from a company that was started by Hitler...

Volkswagen Car Bomber Spec Ad (.mov)

VW'S AD IS SPOOF ON TERROR (New York Post)

January 19, 2005 -- A provocative video clip released on the Internet showing a suicide bomber behind the wheel of a Volkswagen left viewers wondering if it was a car commercial or a hoax.

The spot shows a man who appears to be of Middle Eastern descent getting into a Volkswagen Polo — a smaller version of the Golf that is sold in Europe — and driving down a street in an unidentifiable city.

The man, who is wearing a checkered scarf of the same pattern as the keffiyeh headdress late Palestinian president Yasser Arafat wore, stops in front of a restaurant and then proceeds to hit the button on the bomb detonator.

But the car contains the explosion, presumably killing only the suicide bomber. The tagline: "Polo. Small but tough."

Steve Keyes, a spokesman for Volkwagen in the U.S., said the company only became aware of the clip when contacted by a reporter. He said the ad wasn't produced by Volkwagen's U.S. operations or its ad agency.

Executives believe the video originated in the U.K. because the driver is shown on the right side of the car, but they were unable to reach colleagues there to determine whether it was a hoax or legitimate, he said.

Some Internet blogs and chat boards speculated that Volkswagen unleashed the video as a new "viral" campaign — hands-on advertising meant to be spread via word of mouth or forwarded in e-mails.

Carmakers like Ford and Mitsubishi, along with plenty of other big-name companies, have turned to such tactics to cut through a cluttered ad landscape.

While some campaigns are lauded for their cleverness or creativity, others have drawn fire for being too controversial, deceptive or confusing.

Pick a Blavatsky Quote

Among the indispensable pre-requisites for psychic development, noted in the mystical Manuals of all Eastern religious systems, are a pure place, pure diet, pure companionship, and a pure mind.

Pick a Blavatsky Quote

These wisdom quotes and wise sayings are taken from the Esoteric Studies Guide, often they are from articles by H.P. Blavatsky.
One quote will often be enough for a day of meditation.
Still, in each case there is also a link to quotes on the same or a similar subject.

I have already promised myself that I would not fill up these spaces here at Olla with too much of my rage-ranting but instead try to find more uplifting amusements to ponder for a while. My brain has lately been hard at work trying to devise some more ideas for doing cutups of the post inaugural re-dickless-ness that will ensue shortly thereafter (and I'm sure we'll have an endless amount of it to utilize for more creative means very soon).

It is a bit paradoxical to use the word traditionally with a practice of the avant garde -- but, traditionally the words tape music have referred to the target media of a new kind of music. This new kind of music is not composed for arbitration by a pianist and the piano, so it must not be piano music. . . not for the string quartet, not for the orchestra, not even for the rock 'n roll band.

I've Been to the Mountaintop

Martin Luther King, Jr.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered this speech in support of the striking sanitation workers at Mason Temple in Memphis, TN on April 3, 1968 — the day before he was assassinated.

"Something is happening in Memphis, something is happening in our world."

As you know, if I were standing at the beginning of time, with the possibility of general and panoramic view of the whole human history up to now, and the Almighty said to me, "Martin Luther King, which age would you like to live in?" — I would take my mental flight by Egypt through, or rather across the Red Sea, through the wilderness on toward the promised land. And in spite of its magnificence, I wouldn't stop there. I would move on by Greece, and take my mind to Mount Olympus. And I would see Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Euripides and Aristophanes assembled around the Parthenon as they discussed the great and eternal issues of reality.

But I wouldn't stop there. I would go on, even to the great heyday of the Roman Empire. And I would see developments around there, through various emperors and leaders. But I wouldn't stop there. I would even come up to the day of the Renaissance, and get a quick picture of all that the Renaissance did for the cultural and esthetic life of man. But I wouldn't stop there. I would even go by the way that the man for whom I'm named had his habitat. And I would watch Martin Luther as he tacked his ninety-five theses on the door at the church in Wittenberg.

But I wouldn't stop there. I would come on up even to 1863, and watch a vacillating president by the name of Abraham Lincoln finally come to the conclusion that he had to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. But I wouldn't stop there. I would even come up to the early thirties, and see a man grappling with the problems of the bankruptcy of his nation. And come with an eloquent cry that we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

But I wouldn't stop there. Strangely enough, I would turn to the Almighty, and say, "If you allow me to live just a few years in the second half of the twentieth century, I will be happy." Now that's a strange statement to make, because the world is all messed up. The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land. Confusion all around. That's a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars. And I see God working in this period of the twentieth century in a away that men, in some strange way, are responding — something is happening in our world. The masses of people are rising up. And wherever they are assembled today, whether they are in Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Accra, Ghana; New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; Jackson, Mississippi; or Memphis, Tennessee — the cry is always the same — "We want to be free." They didn't mention hoop skirts with hidden bubble machines underneath, clown makeup or other face paint, scary halloween masks, lingerie or really big hair, so I guess any of those are OK. Wait, wait, maybe not, let's read that last part again:

"...and any other items at the discretion of the security screeners that may pose a potential safety hazard."

Damn. But I agree with Dr. Menlo-- since when do posters, signs and placards qualify as safety hazards? Paper cuts? Um...

Humanclock.com shows a photograph of the current time, with the photo changing every minute of the day (all 1,440 occuring minutes on Earth!) Thus you end up with a rotating picture clock sorta deal.

And of course I had to sit and stare at the page for like three minutes to see each photo change. I think I want to send them a photo but now I'm contemplating what my favorite set of numbers should be. I'm kinda fond of sequences like 1:11, 2:22, 3:33, 4:44 or 5:55...

At Least 22 Pilot Whales Beach in N.C.

Sat Jan 15, 6:30 PM ET

MANTEO, N.C. - At least 22 pilot whales beached themselves on the coast early Saturday, and at least 17 of them died, officials said.

The whales were stranded along a five-mile stretch of land near Oregon Inlet in the northern Outer Banks, said Laura Engleby, spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"We suspect there are more than 30" stranded whales, she said. "The sea conditions have been fluctuating, making it difficult to account for all of them."

It is not uncommon for pilot whales to beach themselves, but scientists do not know why. The pilot whale is a protected species but not endangered.

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service was coordinating a recovery effort that involved biologists, Coast Guard crews and the National Park Service.

If biologists determine any of the whales are likely to survive, the Coast Guard will help move them back out to sea, said Petty Officer Donnie Brzuska.

Brzuska said mass strandings of pilot whales are not unusual in Florida and New England, but the stranding on the North Carolina coast was unusual.

Adult pilot whales can reach 20 feet long and weigh up to three tons.

Kerri, thank you very much for passing this news my way. I don't know about connecting this to my earlier whale dreams but it continues in the line of whale synchs for me since last month. Sending lightbeams to our whale-friends in hopes for their survival...

Wild Rose back in bloom

Yes, yes, I do realize that I have been posting quite a lot lately about Kate and the new album and that not everyone loves her as much as I do, but just indulge me here, I'm really excited about it...

Kate Bush announces new album

23 Dec 2004

"The album is nearly finished now and will be out next year"

Kate Bush, one of the UK's most celebrated singer/songwriters, is to return to the limelight next year with a new album.

After spending over 10 years away from the music industry, Bush will return with the as-yet-untitled follow up to 1993's "The Red Shoes". The late Michael Kamen worked with Kate prior to his death, and is likely to be the last orchestral music heard from the legendary composer posthumously [read: Film composer Michael Kamen dies].

"[The album] features some beautiful orchestral movements by Michael Kamen," writes Kate to her fans, "we had a wonderful day together at Abbey Road Studios last winter".

"There are some lovely performances and I hope you will all feel it's been worth the wait."

Other confirmed contributions come from former Japan bassist Mick Karn (playing bass on a track called 'How To Be Invisible'), drummer Stuart Elliott and jazz percussionist Peter Erskine.

Bush has made a few select public appearances in recent years, singing with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour at the Festival Hall in 2002, and appearing at the Q Magazine awards in 2001 to collect best classic songwriter.

"We'll let you know when," Kate says of the new album's release date.

One thing at a time then.

Is something wrong with Mother Earth?

A quest for answers to explain the world's recent volatility

From space, Mother Earth is seemingly tranquil — the proverbial "big blue marble." But up close it looks like our more than 4 billion-year-old planet is having trouble.

Consider the recent evidence:
  • The violent Indian Ocean earthquake and the resulting tsunami that left parts of 11 nations devastated.

  • November's powerful 6.2 earthquake in Costa Rica that killed eight people.

  • Three volcanoes in Guatemala all simultaneously active for the first time in 31 years.
Should we be worried?

"The world is not coming to an end," says NASA scientist Dr. David Adamec. "Things are fine."   MORE...

The New Absurdist

Absurdist stories by headsfromspace...
We're working on easy ways to help promote the stories posted on The New Absurdist. Hopefully we'll be adding more and more of these in the future, but here's a start.

You may or may not know about BitBooks.com - It's a large directory of online fiction that has it's own search engine and rating system - and it gets a great deal of traffic. They will add almost anything.

In order to be listed on BitBooks, each story page has to carry their Fiction Guide link button. All the stories on TNA already automatically have this button at the bottom of the page. So here's how to get your story in the BitBooks directory. You'll need the following info:
  1. Your Story Title
  2. The complete URL to your story page (it's best to go to the page and cut/paste the URL)
  3. The category you think the story fits into (they have a pull down menu)
  4. How you want the listing to read (by Author - The New Absurdist - and then a short excerpt or description)
  5. Your name for the contact info
  6. Your email
Then click here to go to BitBooks and type it all in. They will send you an email once the story has been listed.

That's it. Give it a shot.

Theatre 'should be offensive'

The National Theatre's artistic director has said causing offence is part of the "business" of theatre.

Audiences "do not have the right" not to be offended by works of fiction, Nicholas Hytner said in the wake of the closure of a play following protests by the Sikh community.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre said it was forced to cancel Behzti following violent demonstrations that threatened the safety of its staff.

But Mr Hytner said theatres and audiences did not endorse difficult subjects such as rape or murder just because they were in a play.

"The Western theatre was invented in Athens precisely to put on stage feelings that were too dangerous to experience in real life," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"Works of the imagination are designed to provoke powerful feelings. Through the theatre, those feelings are exorcised.

"The giving of offence, the causing of offence, is part of our business."

He added it was "desperately sad that we live now in a climate where the taking of offence is thought to be sufficient excuse for violence and intimidation".

Other leading arts figures have warned theatres may steer clear of plays that could be controversial. MORE...

Doom Doom Doom...

Congress Passes 'Doomsday' Plan

Boston Herald
1.9.2005

WASHINGTON - With no fanfare, the U.S. House has passed a controversial doomsday provision that would allow a handful of lawmakers to run Congress if a terrorist attack or major disaster killed or incapacitated large numbers of congressmen.

"I think (the new rule) is terrible in a whole host of ways - first, I think it's unconstitutional," said Norm Ornstein, a counselor to the independent Continuity of Government Commission, a bipartisan panel created to study the issue.

"It's a very foolish thing to do, I believe, and the way in which it was done was more foolish."

But supporters say the rule provides a stopgap measure to allow the government to continue functioning at a time of national crisis.

GOP House leaders pushed the provision as part of a larger rules package that drew attention instead for its proposed ethics changes, most of which were dropped.

Usually, 218 lawmakers - a majority of the 435 members of Congress - are required to conduct House business, such as passing laws or declaring war.

But under the new rule, a majority of living congressmen no longer will be needed to do business under "catastrophic circumstances."

Instead, a majority of the congressmen able to show up at the House would be enough to conduct business, conceivably a dozen lawmakers or less.

The House speaker would announce the number after a report by the House Sergeant at Arms. Any lawmaker unable to make it to the chamber would effectively not be counted as a congressman.

The circumstances include "natural disaster, attack, contagion or similar calamity rendering Representatives incapable of attending the proceedings of the House."

The House could be run by a small number of lawmakers for months, because House vacancies must be filled by special elections. Governors can make temporary appointments to the Senate.

Rep. Brian Baird (D-Wash.), one of few lawmakers active on the issue, argued the rule change contradicts the U.S. Constitution, which states that "a majority of each (House) shall constitute a quorum to do business."

"Changing what constitutes a quorum in this way would allow less than a dozen lawmakers to declare war on another nation," Baird said.

Call for Global Meditation January 18th

URGENT CALL FROM THE MAYAN ELDERS OF GUATEMALA, 1/10/2005

Through the ancient techniques of divination and tools of prophecy, the Mayan elders are calling forth to humanity at THIS TIME to pay closer attention to the messages being sent forth by the mother earth and to immediately take the actions they have been calling for, to unite in an effort to bring balance again upon our planet. The recent destruction that manifested in Indonesia is predicted to now occur rapidly upon five continents of the earth. This message is not meant to induce fear, to the contrary, it is a call for bravery and for action. The elders are concerned about what has been presented in their recent divinations and they call to all humanity to warn their leaders and to work very hard at a spiritual level to prevent the impending destruction. This message, verified and brought forth by various Mayan elders in Guatemala, is for all of humanity. The hurricanes in the US and the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia have been warnings and we must now pay attention or the possibilities of floods in Europe, Los Angeles, earthquakes and other efforts of the mother earth to awaken us will manifest quickly.

There is a specific call for people around the world to join in prayer, meditation or whatever method of spirituality one engages in to unite on January 18th at the time of their local sunset (approx 6:00PM). This date is B'elejeb(9) Keme according to the sacred Mayan Cholq’ij calendar and has the potential for protecting humanity from disaster.

There will be many major ceremonies in the Mayan communities for this purpose. An open invitation is extended to humanity that wish to join the Mayan people for the Waxa’qib B’atz’ ceremonies on February 12th in Guatemala.

Again, this is a strong message, not meant to drive us to react in fear, for this will only negatively impact the level of destruction and our own circumstance. This is the opportunity for humanity to rise to the occasion and come together along the strong lines that unite us and overcome the obstacles that divide us. Please distribute this message widely.

Message issued by Mayan elders in Guatemala and delivered via:
Carlos Barrios, Mayan Ajq’ij, Antigua, Guatemala
Adam Rubel, Co-Director, Saq’ Be’: Organization for Mayan and Indigenous Spiritual Studies

Thanks for the forward, Jon!

Waiting for Kate Bush

I know a few of you out there are Kate Bush fans like myself, so here is a sprinkling of infos from here and there including some updates about her forthcoming album, a book that came out last year and a brilliant piece in the Times which you'll enjoy reading that gives lots of personal background-y stuff from Kate herself.

Did you know Kate has a cat named Pyewackit?

That was the name of the magical cat or "familiar" of Gillian in the film Bell, Book and Candle and was also the name of my mother's cat when she was back in college.

Well, I'm sure we shall all continue to wait patiently out of our sheer love and admiration for her, but it's certainly refreshing to hear the clock is ticking just a wee bit louder these days concerning the progress on the new album.

I just know that something good is going to happen.
And I don’t know when,
But just saying it could even make it happen.

I'm listening to Huw Stephens show on BBC Radio 1 right now and within a few minutes I'm hooked. He's already just played a brand-new version of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love track done by new band The Futureheads. I have to admit, I sort of liked it, and I'm not usually fond of others doing Kate's songs. I like Huw's show. He's young with very bright energy, and has a terrific accent to match his keen radio voice. I'll definitely tune in once he picks up Peel's night and will probably catch the other two dj's on their nights as well.

I'm still baffled about why I didn't read anything about that Kate Bush song being covered from any of the KB lists I'm on...

Fractal broccoli and mirrors...

This is what happens when I stay up waaaaay too late on a Sunday night before I have to go to work the next day. I have like zero energy left at the end of my evening and try to sit down and read through stuff I've sent home to myself in my dayjob blur and nothing makes sense.

So, I come up with nil to post here or anywhere else tonite.

Sorry, nada.

So, when all else fails, grab the digital camera.

Part of the fun of owning one and everyone always sez I need to use it more often than I do and they're right. Someday I may even try to mess with an actual tripod and get into it a little more seriously but for now, I occasionally enjoy hamming around with it and taking random shots.

Check this out, this is what I made for dinner earlier this evening:

It's called Romanesque broccoli and until tonite I had never known there was such a glamorous vegetable. And what could be more fun than to eat a bunch of little nummy green fractals, eh?

Sort of a natural hybrid of broccoli and cauliflower but I have not a clue as to the process of Nature that took hold and created it. I was told by the nice folks at the Alameda Natural Grocery where I buy all of my organics lately that this was yet just another cool example of natural selection from within the vegetable world. I may have to investigate further as that explanation just doesn't quite satisfy my curiousity enough, but maaaaaan was this a delicious choice of veggie. I highly recommend trying some if you can get it or ask your local shops to find it for you. Steam for about 4-5 minutes, no longer-- it's best while still crisp. Has a sort of nutty flavor and a little sprinkle of fresh lemon juice brings it out even more.

Can you believe they still make Cannabis incense?!

Don't get too excited, it smells nothing like the real thing (but then again, did it ever?)

Look how beautiful Mathylda is now!

She's grown into a breathtaking little lovely, that one. She still loves this spot just outside my kitchen window. I think I'm turning into the weird "Spider Lady" down the block.

I look tired, you say?

Well, yeah. I am.
But that didn't stop me from saying hello now did it?

Wal-Mart greeter fired over fake photo

A Wal-Mart worker showed a photo of himself wearing only a sack

January 7, 2005 (Des Moines Register)

A 65-year-old Wal-Mart greeter has been fired for greeting customers with a computer-generated photograph of himself wearing nothing but a Wal-Mart sack.

Dean Wooten was fired in September from his job as a greeter at the Muscatine Wal-Mart store where he had worked for seven years, state records show. He was accused of greeting customers with a picture of himself in which he appeared to be naked except for the carefully placed sack.

Wooten allegedly told customers that Wal-Mart was cutting back on expenses and that the sack represented the new employee uniform.

After some customers complained, a supervisor told Wooten not to display the picture. Five days later, after more customers complained, Wooten admitted he had brought the picture back to work and had been showing it again to customers. He was fired that day.

Wooten applied for unemployment benefits but was denied by Administrative Law Judge Susan Brightman, who ruled that "a reasonable person would know the act of showing a naked body wearing a Wal-Mart sack would not be good for the employer's business."

Wooten said he thought customers would find the photo amusing. It wasn't intended to be critical of Wal-Mart, he said.

"I didn't have nothing against Wal-Mart," he said. "A friend of mine got the photo of the body off the Internet, and he had a picture of me and he put my head on it. When I first seen it, I pretty near died laughing."

Pixie's Movie List

People have asked so therefore I have created a list of all of the movies we've rented via Netflix since January 2003.

Have at it.

Aliens of the Deep

James Cameron's Aliens of the Deep 3D
(Opens January 28)

Aliens of the Deep (2005) is a documentary film, directed by Academy Award winner James Cameron and Steven Quale. It is comprised of at least 40 deep sea dives in both the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

Cameron joins up with a group of NASA scientists, as well as some marine biologists, to investigate several hydrothermal vents in both the Atlantic and Pacific. The vents have their own unique ecosystem, which support diverse organisms such as giant tube worms, swarms of blind white crabs, and vast amounts of shrimp which are capable of 'seeing' water which is heated by the vents. These creatures do not require sunlight like other organisms, and instead get their energy from the vents. They are able to survive in the superheated and sulfurous water. Because of this, the documentary suggests that this is what life beyond Earth might look like. As an alien ecosystem is likely to be a lot harsher than a typical Earth ecosystem, these exotic vents provide valuable insight into some forms that alien life might take.

The documentary shows Cameron's passion for exploring the oceans, as well as his interest in extraterrestrial life. It also showcases the technology employed to reach such depths.

The Cosmic Ray Coincidence Counter

The Rosicrucian Salon presents
the Mysterious Inventions of Dr. Lewis

Among H Spencer Lewis' many talents was that of designer and builder of unusual electrical inventions and prototypes for the purpose of demonstrating the mystical principles and natural law found in the teachings. If he were alive today he would probably be called a hardware hacker in the best sense of the term.
When the first AMORC Rosicrucian Temple was opened in 1915 in New York City it had a 'wireless' radio with HSL often putting on headphones and scanning the airwaves to hear what was out there.

Indeed, part of the description of a Rosicrucian throughout the ages is a mystic who can embrace new technologies to help spread the Light. Modern Rosicrucians have adapted the new Internet technology in much the same way to stay in touch, participate in forums, distribute materials, get research help, learn about local activities and visit web sites like this one.

So, with the goal of inspiring others to find new ways to use new technologies to spread the Light I offer for your entertainment this collection of strange devices from the night gallery of the occult.
The Cosmic Ray Coincidence Counter appears to have been a very early prototype of a Geiger counter to detect and register ambient levels of radioactivity which at that time in the 1930's was still an largely unknown frequency spectrum and scientific mystery.

Just as radio had years earlier proven that speech and music could be transmitted via an unseen and wireless 'ether' it could now use that same radio technology to contact and demonstrate the existence of an even high rate of vibration that was closer still to the divine vibration of creation. Whale Beams

I've been having a series of synchronikitties lately relating to whales, which seemed to begin just before the tsunami hit. I don't know if it's related in any way and I'm not one to speculate, but it's fun to ponder all the same.

Now, I'm rather fond of whales, so I'm not in the least way bothered by this and am quite amused, in fact. I've even been asking other folks I know if they're into whales at all and if so, if they have favorite links and such and now of course I've got more to read than I could ever hope for. I'm going to post what I've run across here just to get it somewhere so it doesn't end up off in the abyss of ideas and occurences that I'd like to actually remember, so here goes (and pardon if there are some sentence fragments or spelling errors throughout-- I'm running pretty ragged these days and am a bit tired from doing non-stop data entry at my dayjob, so typing may be less than perfect.)

It all seemingly began with a dream about whales. I should have actually written the dream down so I could remember it but alas, I only recall a vivid memory of having dreamt of a whale or possibly more than one. I've been really bad about that lately, forgetting to use my dream diary for just these sorts of moments.

Spacey pixie...!

The very next day was when I found out the tsunami hit. A few minutes after that the thought of my whale dream appeared in my mind. I haven't been able to shake it for days and really haven't wanted to. Something totally ultra-psychedelic about the pattern so I decided to just roll with it.

A few days later I was sitting enjoying my morning cup of tea and dAS had the television on and was doing a sort of "Bavarian Teevee" thing where you flip through the channels and make visual and audio cutups as you go. He ended up stopping on a channel playing an episode of California's Gold (one of our favorite shows) titled HUELL'S WHALE ADVENTURE (Part One). The show had a profound effect on me, especially seeing the relationship between a mother and baby whale "playing" with the folks in the little boat and coming around close enough to be stroked on the back and head. I have only been fortunate enough to see whales outside of captivity once in my lifetime, which was many years ago when I lived in Santa Cruz. Went out on one of those nifty whale-watching tours and saw two whales mating, but they were nowhere even near the boat. I can't remember but I think we even had to use binocs to see them at all. I've yearned for an experience like what these folks on teevee were experiencing but nevertheless, watching them put me immediately into a trance and I could not tear myself away.

And so...

I was over at Easy Bake Coven earlier today and was both surprised and delighted to find that she had also put up a link about whales ("...specifically a research program dedicated to interfacing dolphins and whales through music, art, and ceremony...")

And finally, upon getting home from work this evening and seating myself once more in front of "the box" I decided to clean out some of my bookmarks and through all the clicking around, for some reason this blog was amongst the cast of thousands and up at the top of my list, and lo and behold, the first thing I see is a post titled Thar Be Whales Here! which contained a link to a truly bizarre finding:

52 Hz sound - blue whale call?
52 Hz "whale-like" signals were first reported by Watkins et al.(2000). On average these tones had a center frequency of 51.75 Hz and lasted 5-7 sec. These tones are usually produced in groups of 2-6 and were recorded in the NE Pacific.

bloop sound (241K .wav file)
The recorded signal has been sped up 10 times.

Here's another article about the 52 Hz Whale

One last thing I'll leave off with is a beautiful piece of work by a woman named Lisa Walker who I wasn't familiar with until stumbling across the EarthEar Online Sound Center. This is an excerpt (RealAudio) from a piece she calls Tenakee.

Democrats to Force Debate on Ohio Results

Right on Senator Boxer!!! You did not let us down!!!

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) - A small group of Democrats agreed Thursday to force House and Senate debates on Election Day problems in Ohio before letting Congress certify President Bush (news - web sites)'s win over Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) in November.

While Bush's victory is not in jeopardy, the Democratic challenge will force Congress to interrupt tallying the Electoral College (news - web sites) vote, which had been scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST Thursday. It would be only the second time since 1877 that the House and Senate were forced into separate meetings to consider electoral votes.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., signed a challenge mounted by House Democrats to Ohio's 20 electoral votes, which put Bush over the top. By law, a protest signed by members of the House and Senate requires both chambers to meet separately for up to two hours to consider it. Lawmakers are allowed to speak for no more than five minutes each.

"I have concluded that objecting to the electoral votes from Ohio is the only immediate way to bring these issues to light by allowing you to have a two-hour debate to let the American people know the facts surrounding Ohio's election," Boxer wrote in a letter to Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (news, bio, voting record), D-Ohio, a leader of the Democratic effort.

The action seems certain to leave Bush's victory intact because both Republican-controlled chambers would have to uphold the objection for Ohio's votes to be invalidated. But supporters of the drive hope their move will shine a national spotlight on the Ohio voting problems. MORE...

Will Eisner, comic-book legend, dies at 87

Associated Press

January 4, 2005

MIAMI -- Will Eisner, the artist who revolutionized comic books, helped popularize the graphic novel and taught generations of soldiers how to maintain their equipment with the "Joe Dope" series, has died. He was 87.

Eisner died Monday at Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes of complications from quadruple bypass heart surgery last month, according to Denis Kitchen, Eisner's agent and publisher for three decades.

"He was absolutely the greatest innovator the industry ever saw," Kitchen said.

Eisner started making comics in the 1930s and was the first to use "silent" balloonless panels to emphasize characters' emotions by focusing attention on finely wrought facial expressions.

He addressed subjects considered unthinkable in comic books and rarely seen at the time in newspaper comics: spousal abuse, tax audits, urban blight and graft.

"He set not only a high standard of work, he has opened the door that very few people have gone through, which is to recognize comics as a legitimate storytelling medium," said Max Allan Collins, whose graphic novel "Road to Perdition" was turned into a movie starring Tom Hanks.

The graphic novel is a genre that combines elements of comic books and literary novels. His first, "A Contract with God," was published in 1978 and had stories of his childhood and the immigrant Jewish experience in a poor Brooklyn tenement.

"He had a real capacity to bring hope to the most dire circumstances ... the toils of immigrant life," said Robert Weil, an executive editor at W.W. Norton, which is publishing two Eisner books this year.

In 1940, he created a gritty weekly newspaper supplement titled "The Spirit," which at its height had a circulation of 5 million in 20 Sunday newspapers. The supplement consisted of a comic book with three self-contained stories, and "The Spirit" became the most popular.

Its title character was a coroner named Denny Colt, believed murdered by a mad scientist's potion but actually buried alive. He protected the fictional Central City, which was based on New York.

But the series' lead character usually took a back seat to others. "The stories would focus not necessarily on 'The Spirit,' but on some poor average Joe who was having a bad day," Collins said.

Eisner "had been producing comic books for 15-year-old cretins from Kansas," he told The Associated Press in a 1998 interview. With "The Spirit," he was aiming for "a 55-year-old who had his wallet stolen on the subway. You can't talk about heartbreak to a kid."

Eisner used moody shadows and drew panels mimicking camera angles from movies to give the book an edge.

"He was a master of combining words and pictures, creating a totally believable film-noirish world," said cartoonist and playwright Jules Feiffer, who worked as an assistant on "The Spirit" series.

Eisner was drafted during World War II, and the Army had him create "Joe Dope" to teach Jeep maintenance to soldiers with a bumbling comic-strip character.

After the war, he went back to "The Spirit" and continued the series until 1952. The Army also hired him for more instruction manuals, which he produced until the 1970s, Kitchen said.

"Will was a multi-faceted treasure," said Paul Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics, which has released reprints of "The Spirit." Eisner was "a pioneer as a cartoonist as well as a young entrepreneur at the dawn of comic books."

'Pony Up' and Then 'Party On,' Inaugural Officials Say

Kelsey Grammer will be the M.C. at a kickoff inaugural gala honoring the military, the rap artist Kid Rock will perform at an inaugural youth concert and President Bush's most reliable fund-raisers have so far collected $15 million for three days of meticulously planned parties to celebrate his second swearing-in.

"Our first job is to provide a quality experience for our attendees," said Gordon C. James, a deputy director of inaugural events, who was bustling around the inaugural committee's offices on Thursday like a man before opening night.

The Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, will be hosts of the youth concert, where the teenage singer JoJo will appear along with Kid Rock.

The Kid, as he is called, notably said at a party during the Republican National Convention that if he were president he would never get caught having sex in the Oval Office but would instead install cameras in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Thanks to the gracious efforts of the extremely talented Olivia of Yummy Wakame, Ollapodrida now has "official" comment popups that don't require you to login at Blogger anymore. Only one drag is that I lost all my original comments from the last month-- oh well, small sacrifice for having the new-and-improved version with the popup. Quatermass

Belgian label featuring electronica and a few other genres. Very cool stuff in here. Lots to listen to (and a few videos too) plus very nifty interface.

Slather some on your earlids.
Quatermass is about electronica, a label devoted to electronica feeded by artists who simply ignore the rules. This doesn't mean that experimental forms are in our house. As a constant parameter, grooves are filling the releases from explicit to implicit. From abstract hip-hop to hardstep jungle, from techno-like sounds to new forms of soft electronic music, our aim is to go on into the gathering of new developments into electronic fiels. So far we get contributions (albums or remixes)-among others-from artists such as Andreas Parker, DJ Wally, Pan American, Freeform, Komet, Plaid, Pram, Autechre, Jan Jelinek...

These are a few artists that contribute or will contribute to give Quatermass' profiles. But beside these names, we also take care about finding the new generation, the names of tomorrow like Fibla, Tal, BNG, Shudo, Fisherofgold, Nodern and many more to come. Releasing full album from one artist is one major thing, but we do have taste for special project as the versus series (Rather Interesting, Kitty-yo, kompakt), Personal Setting or the remixes album from Freeform or Calla to be released in near future...

36 Children Injured in N.D. Sled Accident

...and the first Darwin award of 2005 goes to...

Jan 1, 4:46 PM (ET)

MINOT, N.D. (AP) - Thirty-six children were injured in a sledding accident during an all-night New Year's Eve party hosted by a religious organization.

Three of the children were hospitalized, but all were in stable condition Saturday, hospital officials said. The others were treated and released.

Police Sgt. Winston Black said more than 100 children ages 12 to 19 attending a Youth for Christ event gathered at a high school around 4 a.m. to slide down a hill using sleds built out of cardboard boxes.

A sign posted on the hill prohibited sledding.

The children and Youth for Christ staff piled eight to 12 passengers on the sleds, then went down the hill in quick succession, Black said. "The sleds struck rocks, a light pole and each other," he said.

Black said he did not know if the organization had permission to use the hill. Police were investigating.

Larry Stenson, director of the Minot Youth for Christ, said Saturday that the injuries happened when some of the children went down the wrong hill - one that was much bigger than the hill organizers intended to use.

Stenson said parents of the injured children "were gracious."

"They know that it was an accident," he said. "I think most of them believe our intent with kids is to love them, help them - help kids grow mentally, physically and spiritually."
