Madonna opens Hotel Kabbalah

Oy vey...

Madonna's support for Kabbalah is growing. She has already spent £3.6million on a West End headquarters for the controversial religious sect. Now she has bought it a £1.6million Regent's Park property.

The star, who became a Kabbalah devotee in the Nineties, has purchased the five-storey Georgian house to be used as a hotel cum drop-in centre for the sect.

The teachings of Kabbalah, whose followers include Britney Spears, Demi Moore and Barbra Streisand, are based on a 4,000-year-old mystical Hebrew philosophy. Denounced by some rabbis as "crackpot", its devotees chant and meditate at meetings into the early hours. (continue reading...)

Returner

I am so stoked right now. Netflix actually has this film (released back in 2002) and I found a link to it earlier while browsing through here and it caught my eye. Just popped it in the 'queue' (that makes 486, wheee... we are such movie-whores!)

SYNOPSIS
The year is 2084 and the human race is fighting an alien militia to save the last remnant of civilization. A young heroine named Milly (ANNE SUZUKI) escapes the war and jumps back in time to present-day Japan in an attempt to change history and prevent the demise of her people. Milly’s return lands her in the middle of a local crime war between Miyamoto (TAKESHI KANESHIRO), a street-smart gunman, and Mizoguchi (GORO KISHITANI), Japan’s crime leader. Milly must coerce Miyamoto to help chase down the extraterrestrial and save the human race…But first Milly must convince Miyamoto she's for real. In the visceral, dark, cold world of the streets, these two fight against the evil and ignorance that will destroy everything.

The Power of Nightmares

This film explores the origins in the 1940s and 50s of Islamic Fundamentalism in the Middle East, and Neoconservatism in America, parallels between these movements, and their effect on the world today. From the introduction to Part 1:

"Both [the Islamists and Neoconservatives] were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created today’s nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful. " The Power of Nightmares, Baby It's Cold Outside.

Iraqi Resistance Report

This news just rolled in on Saturday via the Iraqi Resistance Report. Yet another piece of the gruesome TRUTH we won't be hearing about from the Media Masters.

Dead American troops hung from lampposts as savage fighting continues in al-Qa’im Saturday

Savage fighting continued Saturday in al-Qa’im sending dozens of refugees streaming out of the city on the Iraq-Syrian border as American forces continued to batter the city in what they call Operation Spear.

Refugees from the city told Mafkarat al-Islam that on Saturday afternoon, they had watched as leading commanders of the Iraqi Resistance in the city hoisted the corpses of four dead American soldiers to the top of electric poles in the city.

Al-Hajj Mahdi al-‘Ani told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Hadithah that he personally saw the bodies of four Americans in their well-known uniforms tied at the legs and hanging by legs from electric poles in the center of al-Qa’im.

Other families leaving war-ravaged city recounted how they passed dozens of wrecked US vehicles littering the streets as they left the city. They could see the bodies of the dead Americans who had been killed on Friday night and already had been gnawed apart by wild dogs.

Mafkarat al-Islam noted that US forces had cut off all ground communications with al-Qa’im and were jamming portable and cellular telephone signals, making it impossible for the Mafkarat al-Islam office in Baghdad to make contact with its correspondents in al-Qa’im to confirm the reports.

Beyond the Beat Generation

BEYOND THE BEAT GENERATION archives and publishes the entire, long forgotten 'wild' musical gems out of the great years of the sixties (1965-1969) to a bright audience by using today's technology as we call 'Stream Radio'.

We broadcast 24 hours non-stop through the Internet the music formerly known as: Hippie music, Underground, 60's punk, Flower Power, Mod, Free-Form-Freak-out, Garage music, Psychedelia or Teen Beat, the weirdest, the worst, the most powerful and nastiest ever recorded.

During the 60's all teens were obsessed by music, but only a few touched surface, all groups wanted to be, sound like, or look like 'The Beatles', 'The Rolling Stones', 'Pink Floyd', 'The Doors', 'Jefferson Airplane' or 'The Velvet Underground'.
Music was a movement. Music was the expression of a lifestyle. Music was politics, a protest against establishment, wars and society.

Björk and Matthew Barney - New Film!

Oh my sweet jeebuzzz this film looks frellin' AMAZING. My friend Jesse just clued me into the news (thanks, bro!) It's nice that they included some preview clips of the soundtrack as well-- I'm going to remain on the edge of my seat until the film is released. I find it OH so romantic that these two have collaborated in this way-- it just looks (and sounds) so exquisite. Ok, I'll stop gushing now so you can all just read for yourself:

Drawing Restraint 9, a film by Matthew Barney with a soundtrack composed by Björk, represents the first creative collaboration of two of the most protean, dynamic forces in music and fine art.

It is an apt pairing. Refusing to choose between pop pleasure and restless experimentation, Björk's musical vision weds technology and emotion, countering gut-level expression with an insistence upon formal modernity and innovation.

Similarly poised, and celebrated, within the world of contemporary art as Björk is within her own field, Matthew Barney is a visual artist whose ambitious, rigorous multimedia work encodes esoteric meanings while providing lushly immediate aesthetic rewards. Best known for The Cremaster Cycle, the sprawling sequence of five films made over ten years which was the subject of a recent Guggenheim retrospective, Matthew Barney's work is multimedia in execution but singularly focused in conception: tightly unified fusions of sculpture, performance, architecture, set design, music, computer generated effects and prosthetics, Barney's films deploy the full range of cinematic resources in the service of a hermetic vision rich with densely layered networks of meaning drawn from mythology, history, sports, music, and biology.

The basis of Barney's approach is an operative tension between sculpture and film: the lingering attention to sensuous detail and richly organized aesthetics lends each character, costume, artifact, set, and architectural location within his work the frozen timelessness of sculpture-- yet these components are subjected to vigorous processes of radical rupture and change as the films unfold. (continue reading)

I was also able to track down some more info on the film as well as its premiere dates (and date of soundtrack release) via Verbose Coma

Drawing Restraint 9 will premiere in Kanazawa, Japan, on July 1st, with Björk's soundtrack available on July 25th.

The film, shot aboard the whaling ship Nisshi Maru in Nagasaki, Japan, once again appears to colorfully and epically incorporate Barney's use of gargantuan landscapes, luscious set design, intricate costumes, ethereal sculpture, mystical characters, and experiemental music. Björk's soundtrack is centered around Japanese history and culture and features the sounds of everything from a harpsicord to a children's choir to orchestral swells to an oboe all while her own voice threads them together. Perhaps what is most exciting and rather dizzyingly uncharacteristic for these two artists who, up until now have only been very private partners in love, is that both Björk and Matthew Barney are appearing opposite one another in the film.

Cat Food

Found this while making my way through Peter Sinfield's website and it gave me a chuckle...

Cat Food (click to listen)

Performed by Annie Ross (of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross). Recorded live at the Hampstead Theatre Club during her one-woman Late Night Show.

Can't remember where I found out about Sinfield's website exactly, but it was probably back when I was catching up on King Crimson stuff a while ago-- lots of very interesting things at his site including little tidbits of songs along the way. Lotta writing about metaphysical stuff you will probably all enjoy if you have enough time to read through it, but fun to skim through nonetheless.

Krishna Internet Radio

In its Feb-March 1997 issue Religious Broadcasting magazine, in an article entitled "Not Just Jesus" reported on KHQN Radio, "KHQN-AM/Spanish Fork, Utah is the nation's only full time Hare Krishna radio Station. Devotee Charu Das explains how this came about, "I had a weekly radio show in Los Angeles for the Indian community, called the Krishna Show. To rent time in Los Angeles is pricey and it occurred to me in 1981 that for the same amount we might be able to have a full time radio station somewhere else."

After buying the station in 1982, Das continued to run it on its current AOR format for two years while he and his wife produced their own shows in Los Angeles with a view to converting the format to entirely Hare Krishna religious. Since then, KHQN broadcasts a line up of programming which includes vegetarianism shows, serialized and dramatized Indian epics (the Mahabharat and Ramayana), Puranic literature, stories and music. Some of the more popular shows are on vegetarianism. Food for the Thoughtful interviews famous vegetarian celebrities such as Bob Barker and Hayley Mills. Eating Healthy and Karma Free takes its content from a publication called Vegetarian Times. Music constitutes about 40 percent of the station's programming. "There's a lot of Krishna rock music we play that has been produced by devotees, our own counterpart to Christian Rock music," Charu explains. Music from India and the maha mantra (the repetitive Hare Krishna chant) is also played. "You get the maha mantra to a myriad of tunes and instrumentation." Das is quick to point out that the station doesn't have a large audience.

"Most people have listened to the radio station at one time or another and are aware of its existence, but I think at any given time, there are probably less than 3000 people listening." But , he stresses, "Everybody appreciates the philosophy, the cogency of it. There is nothing cultist about our movement. In this area people have very nice, respectful, attitudes toward devotees." Das is amazed by the lack of opposition to the station. "In 12 years, there hasn't been a single negative incident. On the other hand, there has been a lot of positive feedback." Covering an area nearly 90 per cent Mormon, he realizes that "People aren't walking around looking to be converted to another religion. But since we've been here, there's been a huge upsurge in vegetarians in the valley among the Mormon population." (link)

Metaversal Forecast 6/6 - 6/12

A day late (but not a dollar short) another report from Johannes Ayres...

THE METAVERSAL LIGHTCRAFT
HYPER-ABYSSIC ASTROLOGY FORECAST
AND LIGHT SPECIFIC YOGA PLATFORM

Metaversal Gemini New Moon Mirror

MONDAY, JUNE 6
Greetings to you, my fellow Immortals, you lightcrafty citizens of the Metaversal dream.

All current systems of time are based on a 12:60 ratio which creates a twelve month year and a sixty minute hour. This ratio is taken from the 360 degrees of a circle and not the 365-day rotation of the Earth around the sun. The 365-day rotation naturally divides into thirteen 28-day sequences which correspond to the thirteen lunations occurring during one Metaversal Solar year, plus one extra day, the circulating plus one factor, July 25th of the current solar calendar. Denying the power of thirteen, the twelve month calendar used by the civilized world is a patriarchal device for keeping track of holidays. In the industrial world the twelve month calendar is a template for converting time into money. Of the many calendars used by humans, none takes into account the unity of planetary and galactic time like the one we usre here. The Gregorian calendar exemplifies the illogical distribution of days per month. Instead of thirteen months of 28 days each, the Gregorian calendar distributes the thirteenth month as extra days randomly added to eleven of the twelve months. In use worldwide, the Gregorian calendar is rooted in a belief system held by only 30% of humanity. To continue to use this calendar without regard to its effects can only result in global catastrophe.

Not having understood the Metaversal nature of time, humans have not understood calendars. A calendar is a template of time. The purpose of our calendar coordinated with galactic time is nothing less than the complete syntropic organization of life. Whatever calls you from outside the calendar can wait. You're here now, and ready at last to open your eyes. When you do, you'll see that Time is a soft jagged wave moving through you. And Space is a malleable domain sculpted by perception. Rest assured: the voluptuous terror you feel swiftly gives way to splendour. Suddenly you're more awake than you've been since retiring from the womb. The secret phenomenological truth, encrypted against corruption at your birth but now transmitted lucidly across every synapse, is that the World is determined by imaginative volition. Now that this has been revealed, your purpose is clear.

You might as well get used to it: YOU ARE A GLORIOUS NEW REALITY.

MONDAY, JUNE 6
Todays Gemini New Moon is like a tender box spring shower of ideas dropping into minds and popping out of mouths. Build an engine with words. Let it make you speak. Information flows from every source, presenting a daunting menu of possibilities from which to choose. It's the season of cross-pollination. Minds buzz and hearts flitter as new connections are made. Gemini is the sign most involved with communication and curiosity, impressions and information. For an air sign, ideas have their own reality - and rightly so. Thought stirs desire, desire sparks action, action leads to manifestation. We broadcast what we are thinking and induce it into our reality. This New Moon reminds us of the power of the mind and the power of the word. We now set in motion our month of focus on communication, on making connections, on spreading information. We are in the Libra decanate of Gemini, and we will want our connections to be harmonious and diplomatic-unless they are grossly unfair. Then we will speak up for justice.

Neptune in Aquarius closely trines this New Moon, making it easier to see things from an alternate or even enlightened point of view. The mythic God of the Sea blurs the edges between fact and fantasy, friend and foe, and ultimately dissolves the concepts and forms that prevent us from recognizing our unity in diversity. Neptune asks us to contemplate what we would do differently if we knew that we are all connected, that on some level we hear each other's thoughts, feel each other's feelings, and dream each other's dreams.

WARNING: There is almost no grounding in this chart. Plans created now may be far removed from correspondence with reality. It's a liquidation service for the soul. Upload your Lightcraft onto the great Metaversal web and let it suck away the dross and clutter of this virulent cultural undermind rampant with dubious sampled notions and half-digested leftover memetic visions. Only then will the dragonflies venture to mate on your scalp. Only then will the provisional gods you've held behind plexiglas step forth with new recipes for meringue soufflé, and heaven knows what other wonders.Mercury, the ruling planet of Gemini, conjuncts the Sun and Moon, amplifying the solar and lunar messages to widen our bandwidth and turn our antennae toward new sources. The Messenger of the Gods represents our ability to learn from and navigate the Metaverse.

Mercury represents the suppleness and range of the mind - from reptilian reflexes to neocortical contemplation. Jupiter in Libra trines this New Moon as well, opening our eyes to new prospects and associations. Optimism and faith are augmented by Jupiter's direct station a few days ago; we feel ready to take a big step forward. Jupiter's four-month retrograde phase gave us time to re-evaluate our beliefs and detach ourselves from outdated social and cultural conditioning. We're clearer now about wha's significant and what's merely superficial.

The Sabian Symbol for 17 Gemini is:

"THE HEAD OF A ROBUST YOUTH CHANGES INTO THAT OF A MATURE THINKER. The transformation of physical vitality into the power to build concepts and intellectual formulations through which knowledge can be transferred. We see the transformation of emotions into mind, instincts into thoughts-a process of MENTAL METAMORPHOSIS."

TUESDAY, JUNE 7
This is an odd day. The Moon is still in Gemini this morning, and we may awaken feeling irritable or feisty. There's no skimming the surface now: Each word is examined, each thought filtered, and every idea challenged by doubt, fear, or simple cost analysis. Perhaps we can harness this underlying irritability through applying ourselves to work which requires much energy, either physical or mental. Tear down the pyramids and let whales dine on the mummies of kings! Everything must go. The monkeys saw this coming and stay in the trees.

This mood is apt to continue until Moon goes VOC at 11:50 a.m. PDT. At 5:46 p.m., Moon enters emotional Cancer. Shortly afterwards, half of the planets become especially active, indicating that tomorrow will be a big day. A Mercury-Pluto opposition (23° 20' Gemini-Sagittarius), less than three hours later, intensifies conversations.A candleflame flickers, casting its granular light upon the deserted deck of a whaling ship. It may encourage changing our minds about something important. Or hidden information may come to light. On the other hand, a Sun-Neptune trine (17° 30' Gemini-Aquarius) this evening inspires faith and forgiveness, even in the midst of an emotionally charged discussion. You ripen at will and I like it.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8
Moon continues in family-oriented Cancer, with mostly harmonious and good-feeling aspects. A Sun-Chiron sesquiquadrate on picks up on the Moon-in-Cancer sensitivity. This can make us feel more vulnerable. Egos may be fragile now; self-doubt is more likely than self-confidence. However, the message is to be tenda to ourselves. Instead of pushing so hard, its time to turn inward and address our personal needs, rather than trying to impress others. Those in positions of authority may compensate for their uncertainties by acting pushy, but don't let this external show of force fool you: It's probably just a sign of fear. An untimely script from the loom of oneirica. A molecular tremendum. Open the Gaudì folds and release the thing.

THURSDAY, JUNE 9
Moon in Cancer draws us towards home and work. Notice your impulses today; they will tell you something There is a bi-quintile (144° ) between Mercury and Chiron. This creative connection helps to clarify the nature of our wounds so we can be more successful in healing them. Wisdom and nurturing can shine out. Tonight we may want to take a stroll down memory lane. Address every cat you see today with the greeting 'Good afternoon, Mr. Ravenscrofte', even if the cat is female, and even if it isn't the afternoon. Doff your hat if you're wearing one; click your heels if you're not.

FRIDAY, JUNE 10
At 5:39 a.m. the Moon enters the fixed fire sign of Leo. This mood shift supports forceful personalities and more powerful self-expression. Passion and enthusiasm spring to life, and the weekend can be fun and exciting. A square between Mercury and Mars (29° 09' Gemini-Pisces) quickens minds with fast talk and contentious speech. If we stay playful, this pair can enliven conversations with jokes and gentle putdowns, but its easy for verbal games to get out of hand if insults and aggression are allowed. Today's Venus-Jupiter square (8° 59' Cancer-Libra) is an all you can eat aspect favoring overindulgence. We may want too much, pay too much, and overestimate the value of people and objects. However, the gift of this aspect is to expand the field of pleasure by broadening our tastes and encouraging us to explore new experiences. A quavering aquarian harem in the quarry. A quorum of slavering Pre-Raphælites relinquishing diction for a prime ordeal latent with lysergic appeal.

SATURDAY, JUNE 11
Moon in Leo, directing the show, is bringing on a whole new cast of characters this weekend. Notice changes in your mood and attitudes. Today Mercury enters Cancer, a preview of the coming Solstice. We shift our mode of communicating from blat-it-all-out Gemini to calculating communication in such a way that it will enhance our perceived security. On the whole, this day might feel a bit foggy.

Until nighttime, when Mars enters assertive Aries, and Juno, who wants partnership, enters possessive, sensual Taurus. Sexual desire may be right out front.Rest assured: the voluptuous terror you feel swiftly gives way to splendour. Suddenly you're more awake than you've been since retiring from the womb.

SUNDAY, JUNE 12
Venus trines Uranus early in the morning. This is excellent for new kinds of pleasures and social experiences.A human mating-ball rolls across the horizon: a retinal trick (her eyes on the risen sun). Generally, Venus prefers traditional activities when she's in Cancer, but the harmonious trine from Uranus in Pisces adds a twist, like trying new food or inviting new people to the Sunday family dinner. This aspect also supports fresh perspectives on relationships that can help us to let go of outmoded values or expectations.

At 6:22 p.m., the Moon enters earthy Virgo, a time of quiet reflection and thoughtful conversation. The Leo Moon dramas of the weekend can now be analyzed and assimilated; we take the best, most inspiring moments and find ways to weave them into the fabric of our daily lives. The word lurks in strange and wondrous ways. We could braid one another's hair to the flanks of forest-dwelling cocker spaniels riding our shoulders as if braced for battle tonight, but we probably shouldn't. I'd rather establish a rococo nerve lattice among the quarantined survivors of Operation: Rapture.

Bowie sued

via Yahoo! Launch
Monday April 18, 2005

David Bowie is being sued for £5 million by the estate of Gus Dudgeon, the record producer who worked on his breakthrough 1969 single "Space Oddity".

Dudgeon, who died in a car crash three years ago, was one of his era's greatest producers - working on tracks such as Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual", Marianne Faithfull's "As Tears Go By" and 11 albums by Elton John.

For his work on "Space Oddity", Dudgeon was allegedly paid a £250 advance against a promise of a 2 per cent cut of the sales.

Claiming that he had never received this, the producer had employed royalties' investigator David Morgan to begin legal action just before he and his wife Sheila were killed.

The couple, who had no children, left everything they owned to charity.

The Dudgeons' estate has now re-assigned Morgan to continue his work so that, if successful, extra money can be added to the charity funds.

Bowie is so far believed to be resisting the claim.

Speaking on Friday (April 15th), Mr Morgan said: "I was running the claim for him [Dudgeon] and we had opened a dialogue with Bowie and his representatives in New York.

"We had rather a lot of evidence of the money that we claim was owed to him. Apart from the huge sales of Bowie albums, the single has been on almost every compilation of top hits.

"I was with Gus the day before he died, and he seemed disappointed. He wanted Bowie to sort it out, and instead we got a letter of rejection from his representatives.

"I gave him my word that I would not give up..."

Morgan added: "Bowie sent flowers to [Dudgeon's] funeral, with the message: 'Farewell to the Laughing Gnome'.

"Gus was the other man laughing on Bowie's recording of the song [1967's "The Laughing Gnome"]."

Call to Impeach Bush

The memo: Boston constitutional lawyer seeks Resolution of Inquiry on Iraq

MEMORANDUM
To: Rep. John Conyers, Jr.
From: John C. Bonifaz
Date: May 22, 2005
RE: The President’s Impeachable Offenses

The recent release of the Downing Street Memo provides new and compelling evidence that the President of the United States has been actively engaged in a conspiracy to deceive and mislead the United States Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war against Iraq. If true, such conduct constitutes a High Crime under Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution: "The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."

In light of the emergence of the Downing Street Memo, Members of Congress should introduce a Resolution of Inquiry directing the House Judiciary Committee to launch a formal investigation into whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to exercise its constitutional power to impeach George W. Bush, President of the United States. (continue reading...)
