HELENA ESPVALL started to play electric guitar as a bored teenager in northern Sweden, and went on to take cello lessons and was never bored again. After having played in rock bands, a silent movie orchestra, an arabian ensemble and being inspired to play free improvised music by a shocking Eugene Chadbourne performance, she moved to the US in 2000,where she spends much of her time collaborating with dancers, playing with folk psych band Espers and singing bossa nova and swedish traditional songs.

Growing up in Davis, California and Tucson, Arizona, JONATHAN SEGEL went to college at UCSC in Santa Cruz, CA where he studied under Peter Elsea and experimental music pioneer Gordon Mumma. In Santa Cruz he hooked up with Camper Van Beethoven, apparently for life. He moved to San Francisco, CA in 1989, where he worked with many bands including his own Hieronymus Firebrain and Jack & Jill, moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to work for Dane Davis at Danetracks, a film sound post production facility, then back to Oakland, CA in 2001, where received a Master's Degree in Music Composition at Mills College, studying with Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Curran and Joelle Leandre.

BIG CITY ORCHESTRA is a long running, art/anti-art group based generally in California-USA, with an ever rotating cast of musician and non-musician members. Formed in 1979 as a house band for network of artist residences in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Almost comedically prolific, BCO sailed through the cassette culture movement of the 1980's and 90's with about 130 hour-long releases on over 100 labels. The current formation of BCO is based in the SF/Oakland area of Northern California.

EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE / TradeMark G. (aka Mark Gunderson) is a musician and artist, perhaps best known as founder of the band The Evolution Control Committee in 1986. He is also a culture jammer, equipment designer, software designer, and organizer. The Evolution Control Committee is best known for its copyright-challenging stance, using found sounds to create new musical works at the risk of copyright violation. This made The ECC the target of a cease & desist order from CBS for sampling newscaster Dan Rather, but also earned The ECC credit for creating the "Mash-Up" genre of music (also called Bastard Pop).

well...

it has been a long time since i've seen the inner-workings of my Blogger template and sat still enough to follow through on posting something worthwhile.

i've had a lot of time to think about it while i've been away, and a lot of that has been because i've had my head completely absorbed by performances, recording sessions and yes, the infinite daily grind of my day-job (which is also fulfilling much more than just paying my bills-- they are great and tolerate my whacky artistic needs!)

and so...

this blog will be meta-morphing.

i assure you there will be visuals of some sort and a storyline or multiple ones.

for now, it's going to become a little bit slanted toward the performer aspects of what this life of mine seems to revolve around. lately, there's been a merging of media making its way into what i do, and a lot of that has been my recent plunge into the nether-realms of secondLife. there have been quite a few temporary autonmous zones created there among a small community of artists gathered worldwide for music-making, noise-manipulating, sharing of unique and handmade digital visuals of astonishing variety, and it's just difficult to explain in words.

to anyone that might have hopped off the ollapodrida train long ago, thank you for your interest in reading here. and to anyone who decides to hop off once the postings here transform this space, i salute you for keeping with me all this time. and of course, to anyone who's along for the ride, let's all push the envelope and see how far we can go.

It’s Airweek In where we utilize the powers of active Air, in the kabbalistic World of Yetzirah. This week represents the formative period of the elemental Lunar cycle. Go forth into the World and actively create the vision obtained during last week in the Waters of Briah. The Full Moon is in Capricorn. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Saturn currently is conjunct Mars in Virgo. In Virgo, Mars and Saturn can be on a vigilant lookout for any errors. But for what intention? This combination can either find ways to work together constructively-- or it can demand service in a way that requires superhuman dedication that veers into martyrdom. Are you looking to correct or to extract punishment? This can be your ego's way of self-protection as you turn little errors into reasons to chew someone out or feel superior to their grievous error. Are you chewing for nutrition or out of anxiety bee-atch? Criticism can be constructive if the intention is to improve ourselves and others. But HOW you criticize can make a big difference. When we point the blame at others in a way that shows exasperation, our egos can feel important. Yet, what we are really trying to see is our own shadow side or blindspot. If we cannot observe, consider, analyze, study ourselves, we look for our imperfections in others. We can also use up our energy (Mars) with the constant output of energy it takes to keep our faults hidden and repressed (Saturn). But why do we react in a negative way to errors? With Mars conjunct Saturn with Moon in Capricorn, we may feel the need to use or challenge authority. And with ruler Saturn in Virgo, we do it through the details. If things don't seem to be improving, when is the last time you felt and expressed gratitude for what IS? Even if things are not the way you want and there's more to do. By simply noticing and accepting what is -- without judgment, just observing, you can start to shift the energy.

If you are focused only on achievement and only see what's wrong or missing, you will never feel satisfied. Ambition without gratitude only feeds ambition, and you can't "get no satisfaction." Without gratitude, you will always need more. Regardless of whether or not you can assimilate more. Noticing what is not perfect or good-enough can improve your skills, but only focusing on imperfections can make you feel frustrated and physically tense. You can improve your mood and relax your physical body by being grateful. Your gratitude inspires others to do their best. It makes people want to improve. Find something to compliment. When you're focused only on faults, you can't generate good ideas. Your creative energy is being used to suppress the flow instead of being open to creative solutions. This Full Moon is about how much we consume, physically and mentally, and how much of what we consume we can assimilate. How do we absorb what we consume into usable nutrition? If you hold back and don't take what you need for sustenance, the act of holding back can delay your progress and throw off your timing. This is like missing the beat in music. Sometimes, you want to come in after the beat, but unless that's your intention, missing the beat can throw off your timing. And that can take away from what could be an opportunity to practice and develop skills that can improve whatever work you do.

There are 2 Eclipses in August; Solar on August 1, Lunar on August 16. The path of the visible Solar Eclipse goes right through China during the Olympics. Astrologically, the Sun and Moon lines go directly through the Ascendant in Washington DC during the Solar Eclipse.

The waxing Capricorn Moon, almost Full, makes a blissful conjunction to Jupiter at 6:01 a.m., starting off this Day of Jupiter in Water Week. The morning is filled with harmony and joy. Open yourself to it totally. Happiness is our natural condition. We can best tune into the forces of the Moon in Capricorn by reviewing our good qualities and the good things in our lives, and by expressing gratitude for them. They are the fruits of our light, and that light is meant to shine. Perhaps this is the final paradox, that we can best fulfill our outer social responsibilities by focusing on the light within. The symbol for Capricorn is the mountain goat, with the penis of a fish, another paradox. Did I say penis? How embarrassing...I meant to say PINAX. I got my lady this nice pinax at the mall. This shows that the depths of the unconscious are the foundations which Capricorn uses to build its structure, to climb its own particular mountain, to meet its unique challenge. A Full Moon lights up the night, exactly opposing Sun at 12:59 am on the West coast. To some this is known as the Buck Moon, because July is normally the month when the velvety new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads. It's also called the Thunder Moon (thunderstorms are most frequent during this time) and Full Hay Moon. While quite beautiful, it seems less bright than the Harvest Moon of October. It dominates a fairly benign chart. The Sun-Moon opposition is accompanied by an opposition of Mercury and Jupiter, but all other aspects are easy trines and sextiles, not very closely aligned. One would guess from this that, whatever the projects we undertook with the New Moon, they are moving along nicely and we are reasonably well pleased with the results. The challenges we faced then should be smoothing out. The Sabian symbol for Moon at 27° Capricorn: Pilgrims climbing the steep steps leading to a mountain shrine; the ascent of the individualized consciousness to the highest realizations reached by the spiritual leaders of its culture. Sunday is always a good day integrate all the planets in our personal Lightcraft. In the World of Yetzirah, Air, the Lightcraft is analogous to the active aspect of the psychological body, or for simplicities sake, let's call it Psyche. In the physical body (in Assiah) there are infinite subdivisions down to the frontier of the physical world, where the particles of matter and impulses of energy are interchangeable. In the same way, the Psyche interpenetrates the body so that the upper part of the physical world percolates and influences the lower part of the psyche, and vice versa. In the macrodimensions of the Metaverse, a crisis can generate a direct contact with the Sun in Yetzirah (Psyche) but after the crisis, the connection fades, and the watcher in oneself fades back into the subconscious. The Lightpilot seeks to consciously make permanent connection with the Sun in Yetzirah. This is done by constant observation of actions, emotions and intellect, to perceive impartially the way those functions operate, and to correct and perfect their performance so as to become a true seething. To be the big picture, complete in all its parts. Solutions to problems often come to us in dreams, and this morning is ripe for that. We might dream up a fabulous new approach to something we've been thinking about, or our dreams might show us something about ourselves that we've overlooked or ignored. Diana, or Sailor Moon into your Brow Chakra. It's the Moon's day in the week of active Air and the body in motion. The lunar orb being receptive and reflective, focuses the qualities of the signs and other planets to our personal Lightcraft. The Lunar center, and its intimate connection with the Holographic Image Projection System, is not only the foundation for the astral plane, but is the fiery aspect of astral energy itself. Back to work! Blue Monday. The work week starts with an opposition between Moon and Saturn (6:24 am) giving us a pessimistic or depressed outlook and approach—unless we're aware, that is. This is the day we need to start out by reciting all the things in our lives that we're grateful for, no matter how banal and annoying the exercise may seem at the moment. I remember what one teacher said: we always have the choice to be the effect or to be the cause. We can choose to dialogue with the judgments, doubts, fears that affect us this morning and instead of succumbing, we can encourage the gloomy old Saturn within us, reminding him that our power lies in the attitude we take to things. Prikosnovénie associative label was born in Nantes, in 1990, out of the encounter of two cinema students: Frédéric Chaplain, fond of sound, and Sabine Adélaïde, experienced photographer. The word Prikosnovénie means “light touch” in Russian and aims at promoting inventive music combined with elaborate-exquisite aesthetics. Prikosnovénie is rooted in the then flourishing alternative movement New-Wave. Prikosnovénie could define itself as half-way between the Visa label (for its independent militarism) and the 4AD English label for its enigmatic estheticism.

NASA - Phoenix Mars Lander Images

This view of a portion of the spacecraft deck and one of the footpads of NASA's three-legged Phoenix Mars Lander shows a solid surface at the spacecraft's landing site. As the legs touched down on the surface of Mars, they kicked up some loose material on top of the footpad, but overall, the surface is unperturbed.

Each footpad is about the size of a large dinner plate, measuring 11.5 inches from rim to rim. The base of the footpad is shaped like the bottom of a shallow bowl to provide stability.

Chemical Wedding is a feature film written by Iron Maiden front-man, Bruce Dickinson and long term Monty Python editor, Julian Doyle, who also directed the film. The film is a gothic sci-fi extravaganza set in Trinity College Cambridge, where a scientific experiment goes awry resulting in the resurrection of the infamous Edwardian Occultist Aleister Crowley, who was immortalised into pop culture by the likes of The Beatles, Jimmy Page and Ozzy Osborne.

Starring Simon Callow who plays the reincarnated Crowley, whilst John Shrapnel plays Crowley in flashback in this gothic, sci-fi thriller.
